The first online meeting of the eTernity project decided to go ahead with parallel development a State-of-art analysis and a Requirements analysis. On February 6th 12 participants representing most of the stakeholders in the eTextbook market met to plan the work of this "self-funded" project of CEN Workshop on Learning Technologies.
An early draft of the reports is planned to be available for consultation end of March.
The work will be carried out using a wiki. All interested parties are welcome to contribute.

The eTerinty project was kicked of in Brussels 16th of January. These participants contributed to a very successful meeting, - from left behind: Christian Stracke (University of Duisburg-Essen, Germany), Øystein Johannessen (QIN, Norway), Ingo Dahn (University Koblenz-Landau, Germany), Erlend Øverby (Karde as, Norway / ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC36), Fernando Garcia (AENOR, Spain), Markus Gylling (International Digital Publishing Forum), Annette Grande (Centre for ICT in Education, Norway), Vincent de Jong (Dedicon, Netherlands), Daniel Weck (Daisy Consortium), Gérard Vidal (ENS - Lyon, France).
The eTernity project is a new initiative from CEN Workshop on Learning Technologies and actors in the textbook marked together with stakeholders from education. eTernity is about bringing European stakeholders in education together: developing a common vision, frameworks and specifications for e-textbooks for educational purposes. The idea is to fulfill educational requirements for e-textbooks as a channel for creating interactive, adaptable, personlizable resources to improve learning, education and training.

The CEN WS/LT endorsed the eTernity project as a new work item in its 52nd workgroup meeting on 17th of January in Brussels.
The project will develop
- a state of the art analysis on international initiatives,
- A requirement gathering of European stakeholders, in particular publishers, educational service providers, HE and school networks
- An initial framework for adaptable e-books for learners

A simple lifecycle model of eTextbook authoring and use
Requirements for a new interoperability standard for digital textbooks should be elicited from all the processes taking part in the lifecycle of the learning resource. To help structure the discussion we have identified seven key processes, which in turn could be factored out in a number of sub-processes defined and managed by different stakeholders, described in the figure above.

Preparation for the technical work on the eTernity project has started, building up to the kick-off in Brussels 16th January. Erlend Øverby, Chair of ISO/IEC JTC1 SC36, has contributed a position statement on eTextbook lifecycle. The full contribution is found in the wiki the eTernity team will use for technical work. ISO/IEC JTC1/SC36 is working on a new international standard for e-Textbooks (AWI 18120). A website is put ut to promote the initiative, stating that "the new standard will build on existing e-Book standards, adding any new features that are specifically required for use in learning, education and training."

The eTernity initiative will be kicked off in a whole day workshop at the CEN-CENELEC Meeting Center, Avenue Marnix 17, in Brussels, hosted by CEN Workshop on Learning Technologies, on the 16th of January 2013 (starting at 10 AM). The project will be formally endorsed by the CEN WS-LT meeting on the 17th of January, also in Brussels.
